INTRODUCTION
In the ever-evolving world of music and art, Safar Collective has emerged as a beacon of creativity and collaboration. From humble beginnings as a group of music producers connected through a Discord server, Safar has transformed into a multi-talented collective with writers, designers, musicians, and more. This blog delves into Safar's journey, from its inception during the COVID-19 pandemic to its current phase of growth and expansion.
EARLY STAGES: DISCOVERING IDENTITY & DIRECTION
During the early stages, Safar had to navigate the path of self-discovery. Amidst various name options, including 'Tatva,' the collective settled on the name 'Safar,' which carries deep meaning. Derived from Arabic and Urdu, Safar represents both emptiness and voyage, symbolizing a journey towards infinity. The logo, meticulously crafted by Mythopoet, captures this essence, portraying a never-ending phenomenon illustrated by a void, representing infinite possibilities. The duality of black and white colors represents the principle of contrast.
EPOCH OF DALI: EXPLORING CREATIVITY IN HARMONY
The collective's inaugural project, the Epoch of Dali, brought together 11 music producers from around the world. Each artist approached the project with a unique perspective, showcasing how creativity and inspiration manifest differently for each individual. The project was inspired by a painting that translated various emotions into sound. Producers contributed two sounds each, resulting in a shared sample bank of 24 sounds. From techno to ambient soundscapes, the compilation exemplified the power of community-driven creativity.
CELESTE: FUSION OF SPACE, TIME, & MUSIC
Building on the success of their first compilation, Safar embarked on the Celeste project. With a central theme inspired by a selected picture, each member contributed two samples capturing the mood of the image. This time, the collective ventured into unconventional time signatures, pushing the boundaries of genre and rhythm. The result was a collection of 16 sonic journeys, fluid yet cohesive, accompanied by captivating visual artworks created by Sykedahlia.
PRAHAR: CAPTURING THE PASSAGE OF TIME
Continuing their exploratory endeavors, Safar undertook Prahar, an aural-visual experiment delving into the effects of time on the human psyche. Field recordings captured through phones were transformed into music, while pictures taken at these locations served as inspiration for visual artworks. The collaborative effort yielded 19 tracks and 8 artworks, offering a cohesive experience akin to the movement of time itself.
WHAT'S NEXT? EXPANDING HORIZONS & FOSTERING A COMMUNITY
Safar Collective is now poised to expand its horizons and provide an all-in-one platform for left-field art and craftsmanship. With a new visual identity and website, Safar aims to showcase emerging and established artists from various disciplines. The collective aims to foster a supportive community where artists can grow and learn through collaboration, peer learning, and shared enthusiasm for art. Through engaging podcasts, in-depth written media, and aesthetically pleasing experiences, Safar intends to showcase cutting-edge content from the Indian sub-continent and beyond.
